  • What Does The Bible Say?
    © by Pastor J L Snurr, Sr.

Since there has been much contention and discord among the people of the Church because of this question, we feel constrained to speak our convictions concerning divorce.

God was quite adamant in that He hates the thought of putting away a wife.  This is divorce (Malachi 216) and God hates it.  What does this mean?

The word "hates" here is something we can take personally.  It's directed to us personally.  God does not want his children flitting from one spouse to another at will.

This word taken literally, is just what it says...   hate or detest!   But how do we take that.  I hate Spinach but I eat it.  I hate hot sweltering weather...   but I can live through it.  I hate it when my boy gets brazen and sasses his grandmother, but I'd never turn him away but rather I will correct him.

Now let's look at this in conjunction with what Matthew tells us.  In the Words of Jesus Christ Himself we find Him saying, "And I say unto you, whatsoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery and whoso marrieth her that is put away doth commit adultery (Matthew 199)."

It seems that Jesus explained this question according to the circumstances of this particular case.  He justified that there should be no re-marriage except in the case where the law of matrimony had been broken by fornication, but for the one and only cause He did justify a second marriage when He said, "And marry another."  It is clearly seen among the Believers that some divorced and remarried have the approval of God upon their lives, while others do not.  This should certainly be sufficient evidence to the circumstance of the case or cause of divorce.  In the 4th chapter of John (John 418), Jesus undisputedly recognized the women of Samaria to be legally married to the fifth husband, but did not recognize the sixth man to be her husband.  This shows that second marriage is recognized of the Lord in some cases.

Some do not recognize the second marriage as being legal in the eyes of God, however if this were the way the Lord looked at the matter, He would have said to the woman of Samaria that she had "one husband and six other men" but He did not do this, but recognized the fifth marriage to be as legal as the first.

Also, Paul supports an instance where remarriage is lawful.  In 1 Corinthians (1 Corinthians5), we are told that we are not to separate if at all possible for we might save our spouse.  However, we see that Paul tells us that if the unbeliever leaves, let him go for we are no longer bound in such cases (1 Corinthians 710-14,16).

Then later Paul says, "Art thou bound unto a wife?  seek not to be loosed.  Art thou loosed from a wife?  seek not a wife.  But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned; (1 Corinthians 727,28)"

Some teachers will tell us that this is speaking only about virgins, but it can not be.  If we continue, we see that Paul addresses the married people and the virgins too, saying, "...and if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned (1 Corinthians 728)."  Therefore, we see clearly that the man indeed has a wife and if he's loosed from that wife, and remarries, he did not sin.  Did God deceive us here, I think not.

We believe that, keeping in context with other passages, this applies to those who were innocent parties in adultry cases, and those whose unbelieving spouse leaves.
