    DISCERNMENT
    vs
    Judgment

      What is Discernment?

  • Seeing through a surface problem to root causes.
  • It's related to the motivational gift of Exhortation

    Scripture Text:

""...for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart."  1 Samuel 16:7b

    Some of the Attributes:

  • "Having the insight and sympathetic understanding in a difficult situation and being able to make an accurate judgment."  (a.c.e.)
  • "Learning to use all your faculties to go beneath the surface of a problem."
  • "Learning to direct the true wishes and feelings of others."
  • "Knowing what to look for in evaluating people, problems, and all things."
  • "Knowing who God wants me to serve."

    Questions to ask yourself:

    1.  Have you ever cheated on a purchase you have made?
    2.  Have your friends ever talked you into doing things you later regretted?
    3.  Are there activities that you enjoy which others feel are wrong?
    4.  Have you ever given confidential information to a person who misused it?
    5.  Have you ever experienced the consequences of reproving a scorner?
    6.  Have you used words and expressions that have caused hurt and misunderstanding?

Projects and Bible Study Questions to help instill this quality:

  • Discuss the spiritual gift of "Discerning of Spirits", and how it relates to the topic of discernment.
  • In John 3, Jesus demonstrated the quality of discernment in His conversation with Nicodemus. How did He do so?
  • Tell about another Bible Character who used discernment.
  • Tell about a Bible Character who did NOT use discernment.
