In the early 1980's I was called to a little Full Gospel Pentecostal
Church in Cumberland Maryland where they were having a hymn sing.
I'd always enjoyed these singins (singings) and enjoyed the
spirit of the services when I was there.
I was glad to be there, the place was packed full with folding
chairs brought out so that when the pews were filled, others could
be accommodated. However, this one time I was sitting on the
right side about half way back along the wall. For some reason
this particular service was rather dull spiritually. I didn't
feel the normal excitement which I was accustomed to in this church.
I kept a prayerful attitude for what was happening. I wanted
to see the Lord to work mightily as was the norm there. I was
beginning to question what was behind this apparent hindrance of the
Spirit.
Finally, when the service was about half over, I decided to get serious
and prayed that God do something, anything, to break this hindrance.
Well, it was this day that I realized that God really did have a sense
of humor. I did say "something, anything"... and He did.
Mind you, this is a Pentecostal church and we do get rather excited at times.
While someone was singing, not long after my prayer, a lady on the
other side of the church jumped up and shouted, which can be rather
normal for we Pentecostals. But not just her...
one by one, people all over the sanctuary were standing and starting
to worship and praise God.
Oh the Spirit of God fell over that place like I'd never seen before.
The praise and worship that proceeded from that point unto the
end of the service and through the alter call.
After the service, we found out what
REALLY happened with the lady
on the other side of the church. She was sitting there like everyone
else and suddenly....
...The leg on her metal folding chair
BROKE !!!
Can you imagine that....? God answered prayer by breaking that
poor lady's chair. Of course she had a sense of humor about it
and I deeply admire her for that.
Yes we can pray and God will answer those prayers, but they may not be
answered like we might expect or even want.
Consider this, when we pray for something, God can answer in one of
four ways:
1. You can have what you want right now
2. You can have what you want after you do something first
3. You can have what you want, but you must wait a while
4. No! You cannot have it!

When He says no, well, that's when He knows what's best for us and
will not allow us to have it for one reason or another. It's
truly a very loving God, who will look out for us like this.
