    About Me, Two!!

  • When my oldest daughter was only three years old, I had the chance to walk her to the day care school just around the corner.
She was about three years old at the time and would walk hand-in-hand with me as we walked a block down the street, turned the corner, and down the hill.

She would stop at some little thing that would greatly excite her.  Maybe a bug, or toad, or a leaf.  She was at the age of her greatest learning and was soaking up everything.  She'd ask me about what I could tell her about it and I'd give her the great advantage of my minute knowledge...   but she enjoyed the education she got from her Dad on these daily excursions.

One day as we were walking along, We'd gotten about 200 feet down the sidewalk and I realized that she wasn't holding my hand as usual.  I stopped and knelt down and asked her, "Dawn, you always hold my hand.  Would you like to hold Daddy's hand the rest of the way to school?"

She looked intently at her little hands, then turned toward me and as she clasped them together, she said, "I think I'll hold my own hand."  With that she started toward school again.

I walked silently beside her and watched as she still had her little hands clasped together.  As we walked into her classroom, she was still holding her own hand.  Her teacher looked with questions in her eyes.  I explained that she didn't want to hold my hand but rather she decided to hold her own hand.

As I quietly walked back to toward our house, I thought to myself, 'She's just a child...   I didn't realize a she'd demand her independence this early in life.  She thinks her wings are ready for flight and I think I'm losing my little girl already."
